N2 - We present a conformable antenna design for radio frequency (RF) based tracking of hand gestures. A substrate-integrated waveguide leaky-wave antenna (SIW-LWA) is employed as the radiating element to couple RF signals into the human hand. The antenna is envisaged to be integrated in a wristband topology and capture the changes in the electric field caused by various movements of the hand. In this numerical study, we treat the LWA as a two-port device and design a simplified model of the wrist based on published measured tissue properties. As such, we investigate how the S-parameters are affected due to changes in the wrist anatomy (e.g., tendon displacement). These variations can be mapped to individual gestures and used to interact with a computer. As small as 0.1 mm tendon displacements have shown very distinct frequency responses which highlights the potential sensitivity of such an RF-based system in hand gesture recognition.
