Description

Scope of Work Alliance Fellow The Alliance Postdoctoral Fellowship at Arizona State University (ASU) is designed to maximize the fellows opportunities for professional development and participation in the broader mathematical community. Dr. Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Joaquin Bustoz, Jr. Professor and Regents Professor, and Executive Director of the Mathematical, Computational and Modeling Sciences Center (MCMSC) serves as the Alliance Fellows mentor. MCMSC houses three programs that will offer the Fellow the opportunity to participate in vertical mentorship with high school students, undergraduate students, and graduate students: the Joaquin Bustoz, Jr. Math-Science Honors Program (a summer high school program); the Institute for Strengthening the Understanding of Mathematics and Science, or SUMS (an academic year program for ASU undergraduates); and the Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute, or MTBI (a summer research experience for undergraduates, and some graduate students, mostly non-ASU participants). In addition, the MCMSC supports and provides research opportunities to approximately 20 graduate students in the Applied Mathematics in the Life and Social Sciences, Ph.D. while providing teaching and mentorship support to its associated undergraduate program. The MCMSC carries its mentorship/research/teacher components of its mission through its three postdoctoral associates, ASU faculty members from the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SOMSS), School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC), School of Life Sciences (SOLS), the School of Sustainability and faculty from the Division of Mathematical& Natural Sciences, New College of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences Department of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (ASM) at College of Technology& Innovation (CTI). These groups involves over 20 active researchers at the interphase of the biological, mathematical and computational sciences, a group that is complemented by the large number of long- and short-term regular visitors to the MCMSC, a group that has included Karl Hadeler from Tbingen, Zhilan Feng from Purdue, H.T. Banks (North Carolina State), and Fred Brauer from UBC (Canada). The Fellow will be given continuous advice on how to select the opportunities in these programs to develop and hone his skills as both a mentor while expanding his close and personal scientific network. In addition, he will be teaching in SOMSS/
