N2 - Visual impairment causes significant loss of mobility for millions of individuals, particularly with respect to loss of ability to drive. Recently, much research has been invested towards the development of assistive devices to allow the visually-impaired to drive. This research is locked in a race against the self-driving car, which would allow both the visually-impaired and the sighted equal use of personal motor vehicles. Here, we present a review of assistive devices for the driving of visually-impaired individuals, and introduce a new concept for a low-cost, high-resolution assistive device.
