During much of its history, experimental fluid mechanics has been constrained to use either qualitative flow visualization or quantitative measurements of time series at a one or at most a few points. Developments in the technologies of particle image velocimetry and other multi-dimensional measurement techniques have vastly enhanced the capability of the flow research scientist and the engineer. Used properly, multidimensional data offers the possibility of revolutionizing the practice of flow research and development. To do so it is necessary to apply appropriate methods of analyzing the data sets and interpreting the results.
