Abstract

Distributary flow areas such as alluvial fans, bajadas, and alluvial slopes, and alluvial plains along mountain bases pose quite different and interesting problems for the design of hydraulic structures and highway crossings. The FEMA method is only at best an approximate method that ignores fundamental hydraulics. The hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of alluvial fans has many associated uncertainties that are ignores in the FEMA method. This paper explores some of those uncertainties and presents methodologies for their analysis.
