Abstract
Twins occur when two fetuses share the same uterus during a pregnancy. Twins sometimes share a special language and they often perform better at school when they are allowed to be in the same classroom when they are very young. Twins may be shyer than nontwins, and they often are each other' best friends. Because there are two types of twins - monozygotic, who share 100% of their genes, and dizygotic, who share on average 50% of their genes - these two types can be compared to obtain estimates of the genetic and environmental influences on behaviors. Twin research has yielded much information about genetic influences on behaviors such as temperament, aggression, and shyness.
