THEMIS makes a thermal Odyssey to Mars

The thermal emission imaging system (THEMIS), which is an infrared imaging system in Mars orbit for mapping surface mineralogy and searching for hydrothermal activity, is discussed. The focal plane assembly of visible imaging subsystem (VIS) of THEMIS consists of five narrowband filter strips mounted over a kodak KAI-1001 CCD array of 1024×10249-μm detectors. The design of THEMIS allows collection of images in both long wave infrared (LWIR) and visible sections of spectrum. Remote sensing studies of natural surfaces and laboratory measurements show that 8 to 10 spectral bands in LWIR can detect minerals at abundances of 10%.
