Abstract

Tensile properties of cementitious composites with carbon whiskers are studied. Significant increase in the ultimate tensile strength is observed, however due to the inability of the whiskers to bridge the macrocracks, the post peak toughening effects are limited. The fracture toughness may be increased by addition of Polypropylene (PP) fibers. Fiber pullout is the main reinforcing mechanism of the PP fibers and results in significant energy dissipation. Hybrid composites of both carbon and PP fibers are shown to have superior properties as compared to either reinforcement.
