Abstract

Driven by the growing need for lightweight and low-cost antennas, we investigate metasurface antennas as a potential SAR hardware platform. Metasurface antennas can generate arbitrary radiation patterns and electronically modulate them without requiring complex components such as phase shifters and amplifiers. In this work, we operate in the radiative near field of metasurface antennas and translate them with aperture synthesis to access 3D scene information without requiring spectral bandwidth. This work reviews metasurface antenna operation and examines their exciting potential in single-frequency 3D SAR imaging systems.
