title = "Surface wave efficiency of microstrip antennas",
abstract = "The surface wave efficiencies of identical patches - one probe-fed and the other aperture coupled were calculated, and found to be almost the same. The surface wave efficiency is a function of the substrate thickness and dielectric constant as well as the current distribution of the antenna. Since the current distribution for both geometries are very similar, the surface wave efficiencies are almost identical. As long as the resonant frequency of the slot is above that of the patch (to avoid losses due the slot radiation), it should be safe to assume that the overall efficiencies of the two geometries are very similar. The efficiency of the aperture coupled patch is only slightly smaller due to surface wave excitation by the microstrip feed line.",
