Abstract

The coherent eddy structures that have been discovered to date are reviewed and discussed. These include the nearwall low speed streaks and quasi-streamwise vortices, hairpin vortices and hairpin vortex packets, large-scale motions and very large-scale motions. Interactions between the different scales are discussed and the experimental problems of observing coherent structures in geophysical flows are considered.
