State of inductive case studies in operations management

Abstract

Our paper provides a state-of-the-art evaluation of inductive case-based research articles in operations management (OM). Four OM journals are included in this study; they are in alphabetical order: Decision Sciences (DS), Journal of Operations Management (JOM), Management Science (MS), and Production and Operations Management (POM). The inductive case studies chosen were published between 1992, when POM was first published, and 2005. We found that there have been an increasing number of inductive case publications in the past 14 years although the percentage of inductive case studies to the total publications has remained low. Of the four journals, JOM has published the largest number of inductive case studies. We also identified key OM subject areas that have been studied by case authors. Finally, we detected a number of areas where case authors have closely followed guidelines from the extant literature on how to conduct inductive case-based research as well as areas where improvements need to be made.
