Abstract
An orchestration system helps the teacher conduct a face-to-face class that includes small group work as well as activities by individuals and the whole class. The FACT (Formative Assessment with Computational Technology) system is an orchestration system designed to support formative assessment and collaborative learning. Students use tablets to edit electronic posters bearing movable cards. Teachers use a dashboard that both increases their awareness of their students’ state and helps them move fluidly and easily among activities. The FACT system has undergone extensive iterative development, with 28 classroom trials so far. This chapter discusses some of the lessons we have learned about designing this orchestration system.
