Abstract
The techniques for grid monitoring, protection, and control to reduce the frequency and severity of catastropic failures in large power systems are presented. The measurment of the state of the power system with synchronized phasor measurements enabled effective and accurate monitoring of the condition of the network in real-time with latencies of the order of milliseconds. The development of a prototype software system led to the calculation of the vulnerability index (VI) of the power grid in order to reduce the chances of catastrophic failures.
