Sociometric status and bullying: Peer relationships, aggressive behavior, and victimization

    This chapter examines how sociometric status influences childhood bullying, aggressive behavior, and victimization. Sociometric status is associated with bullying dynamics that pose a serious threat to victimized children and damage school climate. Special attention is given to the affect of sociometric neglect and rejection on child development. By using sociometric testing, small group practitioners are able to identify low status children at risk for becoming victims of bullying. Further, practitioners in schools can help prevent and reduce bullying by implementing sociometric interventions such as peer pairing of popular and rejected or neglected children. By working to create classroom and school environments with fluid sociometric roles, we can make strides to promote the safety, security, and growth of all students.
