Abstract

Autonomous vehicles has become a reality in an unusually fast pace. Just few years ago, the lay person just heard of it as a science fiction. Today, they are driving on the public roads with a very good performance and safety record; rare for such a young technology. However, due to this unusual rise, the focus of researchers, engineers, and media is mainly about their technical abilities and limitations, and little on their potential effect on our culture or daily life. This paper provides a critical analysis of current autonomous vehicles social dilemma. The paper raises questions regarding their impact on our society and in turn the society impact on these vehicles. It summarizes the flaws, the problems and the uncanny valley of autonomous cars and raise a question why we should look beyond these for a safe future.
