title = "Simple Rt-QPCR chip for single marine diatom cells",
abstract = "This paper presents the design and experimental results of a novel microchip that examines gene expression of single marine diatoms with a streamlined operation. To our knowledge, it is the first microfluidic device that integrates a streamlined process to analyze individual living diatoms that are protected within the silica frustule structures. This simple chip level device takes advantage of droplet arrays to easily load individual cells into isolated droplets and to perform reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) to analyze gene expression at the single cell level between different growth conditions. The current version of the chip does not need complicated liquid manipulation and is compatible with commercially available thermocyclers.",
