Abstract

Positive Youth Development (PYD) is a strengths-based perspective to adolescent development, which argues that youth will thrive then there are mutually beneficial relations with the people and institutions of their social world. PYD has been criticized for neglecting the social conditions of marginalized youth due to various forms of systemic oppression such as racism. This chapter advances a new model of PYD, antiracist PYD. Antiracism includes a critical understanding of racism, Whiteness, and White privilege, and consistent behaviors that challenge racism. The Six Cs have been reconceptualized as antiracist competence, antiracist confidence, antiracist connection, antiracist caring, antiracist contribution, and antiracist character. This chapter also offered didactic tools to support PYD and character researchers regarding research on character development among Black, Latinx, Asian, Native American, and multiracial youth, and antiracist character development among White youth.
