Abstract

A study was conducted to determine how on-off intermittency is affected when there is a perturbation so that the invariant subspace no longer exists. Two important scales in the problem were considered. One is the threshold y_th of a variable y transverse to the invariant manifold, and the other is the perturbation parameter η that characterizes the extent of the symmetry breaking. It was found that a qualitative change in the characteristics of on-off intermittency occurs immediately as η is increased from zero in both cases.
