In this work, the effect of suspended particle size on filtration is examined using a model system of spherical latex particles and small diameter (2.5 cm) filter columns with 0.4 mm diameter glass bead filter media. Filtration performance is measured by determining the removal or deposition of particles and the head loss or pressure drop caused by the deposited particles. Results are presented for in-line or contact filtration (no flocculation step) at a constant rate of 5 m/hr. Particle removal is determined by measuring particle concentrations in influent and effluent samples using light scattering (absorbance) and particle counting (Coulter Counter) techniques. Head loss is measured using water-filled manometers.
