Routing protocols enable multi-hop communication in mobile ad hoc networks. Most routing protocols make use of timers to respond to link failure caused by network dynamics. Despite their importance, the duration of these timers is typically set in a trial-and-error manner. We apply techniques from design and analysis of experiments to show the effect of timers on response variables and to identify factor interactions involving timers in AODV. Such techniques are a first step toward a formal methodology for timer value optimization.
