Abstract

Recent research on in situ electrochemical disinfection of water has shown promising outcomes in inactivating microorganisms. Nevertheless, to guarantee a consistent provision of pathogen-free and safe water, additional aspects are needed to be addressed in future research. This current opinion suggests strategies for assessing disinfection efficiency to facilitate advancing technology readiness level. It also discusses the latest progress in electrochemical disinfection to prevent the formation of toxic disinfection by-products as well as the impact of water composition on treatment performance.
