Abstract
A general model with non-linear per capita growth rates for mutualism is described and given a complete qualitative analysis. The model incorporates both facultative and obligate species, and includes commensal interactions. The various possible behaviours conform to observed possibilities. A specific class of examples is proposed which illustrates these possibilities, including some not feasible with a Lotka-Volterra model.
