Abstract

Multivariate process control procedures based on simultaneous univariate control charts have been suggested by several author. These procedures are very sensitive to the direction of a process shift. We present a simple geometrical description of this directional sensitivity and quantify its effect. The advantages of control charts based on the principal components are noted.
