Abstract
Here we discuss the manner in which thin films surrounding cracks can induce deformational mode transitions in materials. That is cracks which normally deform by dislocation emission can be made to cleave (and vice versa) by 'coating' the crack surface with films of appropriate properties. Such films actually form on metallic crack surfaces in certain environments and lead to the phenomenon known as stress-corrosion cracking. Analytical calculations are presented and the results indicate that the important parameters influencing deformational mode transitions include elastic modulus, film-substrate lattice parameter mismatch, film thickness, and interfacial bond strength.
