Abstract

A brief report is presented of the design, construction, and study of a 500 Kv impulse generator. The generator is of novel design in that an air core, toroidal transformer is an integral part of the design. The details of the transformer design are given and, in particular, the transformer is modeled in sections for digital simulation. The simulation is being used in designing the transformer in order to obtain a desired high voltage waveshape. The unit is expected to provide a pulse of nearly 5 kilojoules at 500 KV.
