Abstract

Modern cars have become a sophisticated computing platform with advanced digital features in the engine, body, and cockpit. Highly interactive applications and gadgets in the cockpit require extensive driver attention and often result in increasing distraction and accidents. Our work discusses a new design to help reduce driver distraction by providing redundant modes of interaction in the cockpit similar to the human-human interaction. Our test results show a significant improvement by adding additional modes to the traditional speech-recognition system adopted by most of the car manufacturers.
