Abstract

A general approach is described to knowledge engineering in medicine is described. A Medical Knowledge Engineering Assistant (MEKEAS) has been constructed that guides a relatively naive user in the construction of an expert system. The expert system created consists of a causal-taxonomic net, rule bases, and a solution strategy. Common features of medical expert system are analyzed in order to define the steps of knowledge acquisition and the use of appropriate techniques. The identified elements are concept organization, domain principles, and solution strategy which are described in some detail. Important issues such as inference, uncertainty, and explanation are discussed. Finally, the architecture of the knowledge engineering assistant is presented.
