Abstract
Safe and economic warehousing of perishable products is an important issue in logistics. Frozen dairy, meat, fruit and seafood are such products which require careful monitoring during warehousing. Modern technologies present new opportunities for improving operations. Using environmental data collected with RFID technology, we develop mathematical models that consider remaining shelf life in determining the dynamic assignment of perishable items in warehouses. The models maximize the total value of the items in the warehouse and can be expanded to include numerous considerations including setting of discount prices as items age. The value of the models is demonstrated with an example.
