Linear and nonlinear optical properties of planar photonic crystals

Square-lattice planar photonic crystals (PPC) with bands exhibiting no dispersion along the γ-X direction of the square Brillouin zone were designed for nonlinear optical conversion studies. The bands offered tuning flexibility and conversion efficiency advantages when considering PPCs as hosts for second harmonic generation. This allowed estimation of absolute external second harmonic generation efficiency in specular reflection. Enhanced conversion efficiency was explained in terms of PPC membrane acting as a nonlinear resonant cavity that coupled to fundamental and second harmonic fields from the two dimensional texture.
