Abstract
The Faraday rotation effect is an electromagnetic phenomenon in which the plane of polarization of a polarized beam rotates as the beam passes through a medium in which a magnetic field exists. This effect may be used to measure high current which is the source of that magnetic field. This paper describes an instrument for laboratory applications and an instrumentation method for field applications in electric power engineering for the optical measurement of high currents. Comments on difficulties in implementing optical instrumentation, and methods of overcoming those difficulties, are given. A discussion of liquid media for this application is presented.
