Conclusions reached by the National Research Council of the US Academy of Sciences concerning the use of bioremediation for groundwater and soil clean-up projects are summarized. The council's report was prepared by a committee of 14 experts in microbiology, hydrogeology, environmental engineering and geostatistics and provides a framework for evaluating projects. Case studies are outlined. (D.W.Taylor)
