Abstract
Two examples of recent studies in high pressure polymorphs of inorganic substances were reported on GeO2 and ZrO2. The first one was the measurement of rate of phase transformation from α-quartz to rutile type of GeO2. The phase change proceeded in two steps: induction period and structural change. From the analysis of measurement it was possible to calculate the activation energy for the phase transformation. The second was the investigation of ZrO2. Its high pressure phases were difficult to quench, but thermodynamic data were obtained which enabled the calculation of slopes of phase boundaries.
