Abstract

Large size sintered diamond anvils were used in the multi-anvil apparatus in order to raise the attainable pressure. Pressure generation up to 18 GPa in the DIA apparatus (truncation 3 mm), up to 30 GPa in a Drickamer anvil cell (anvil top 3 mmO), and more than 23 GPa in a 6-8 two stage system (truncation 2 mm) were attained, respectively. Although some problems still remain, such as the occurrence of cracks in the anvils and blow outs on release of pressure, this sintered diamond material is eminently suitable for use in multi-anvil apparatus.
