Abstract

The National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) was established late in 1988, to conduct basic research of geographic information systems and geographical analysis. This paper reviews major results obtained on the first four major Research Initiatives of the NCGIA. These Initiatives address: accuracy of spatial databases; languages of spatial relations; multiple representations; and use and value of geographic information in decision making. Then, the other 9 Research Initiatives of the NCGIA are mentioned in much less detail. Geography as a discipline is very important to NCGIA's research agenda and to the development of GIA and the inclusion of spatial analysis in GIS. GIS itself is important for Geography, as a test-bed for the evaluation of geographic theory and as a link between theory and application. -Authors
