Abstract
Chemical engineers can now begin to think about intelligent computer-aided process development and design, analysis and diagnosis of process operations, as well as planning and scheduling of plant-wide operation. Major chemical processing companies have established groups to explore and exploit systems technology. Universities have begun to respond to inquiries in these areas as well. Encoding knowledge for chemical engineering requires knowledge engineers who are versed in the techniques of artificial intelligence as well as the particular domain of knowledge such as molecular properties, process design control and systems theory, organic chemistry, and biology/biochemistry.
