Abstract
Straw is the plant structure which is left behind after a grain harvest. A new form of composites which utilizes oriented wheat straw fibers is being developed. Wheat straws were bundled in cables and used as reinforcement in cementititous matrix using low strength matrix. Experiments were conducted to obtain preliminary load displacement characteristics and other related behavior of oriented straw specimens. Both compression and tension tests were performed; a total of 27 compression and eight tension tests were completed on limited available samples. It was observed that the straw fiber reinforcement can increase the load carrying capacity of the low strength cementitious matrix material approximately 200-250% in compression comparing the averages of the testing results. Oriented straw fiber composites can be good candidates in building applications where high strength properties are not required.
