Experimental study of shear behavior of Kevlar 49 fabrics

Abstract

This paper presents the experimental program of picture frame test and discusses the shear behavior of the Kevlar 49 fabric using three different size specimens (75 x 75 mm, 100 x 100 mm and 125 x 125 mm). The results show that the shear response is highly nonlinear to the shear angle and the shear resistance depends on the specimen size, i.e. larger specimen need more shear force to deform. But both the shear force and shear stress are not dependent upon the specimen size after normalization. The full-field displacement of the specimens during loading process was obtained by digital image correlation (DIC) and an image processing code developed in MATLAB. The displacement values obtained by these two methods were compared with each other, and good agreement was achieved. The shear angles obtained by the MATLAB code have good correlation with the theoretical ones based on stroke measurement.
