Calculations with two-body interactions are usually accomplished by the use of multipole expansions. For many interactions of physical interest, the terms in the expansions are expressible by use of simple functions which, however, may exceed the numerical range of many computers at large or small coordinates. Various techniques are described which can substantially reduce or eliminate such difficulties with little or no loss in program efficiency.
