Abstract
High resolution images have been recorded for a variety of silicate minerals, including the pyroxenoids (wollastonite and rhodonite), amphiboles, serpentines and several layered minerals. Structural images displaying resolution of interatomic distances of 2. 7 A and upwards have led to: (i) the discovery of new topologies such as multiple chain structures that coexist within an amphibole matrix (as in nephrite jade); (ii) a correlation betwen local compositions and polytypic variants in certain sheet silicates, and to the elucidation of problems associated with nonrandom disorder and the discovery of new polytypes in others; and (iii) elucidation of the atomic structure of various kinds of structural imperfections.
