Abstract
The effect of the pH of solutions on the photosensitizing ability of eosin was studied. It was found that, via photosensitization of eosin, benzil can be reduced by many reductants in basic solutions, while in neutral and acidic solutions it cannot be reduced though eosin itself is photoreduced to the leuco form leading to rapid fading of the solutions. Based on the semi-reduced intermediates detected by photo-induced electron spin resonance and flash photolysis, the reaction mechanism was considered in basic, neutral and acidic solutions, respectively.
