Abstract

A study was conducted to demonstrate the effect of mounting material compliance on nanoindentation response of metallic materials. It was demonstrated that that compliant mounting materials can significantly affect the measured modulus with indentation depth. A model was prepared using the finite element method (FEM) to demonstrate and confirm the relationship between mounting material compliance and measured nanoindentation response. Nanoindentation investigations were conducted on commercially available metallic material (cp-Ti) with two different mounting materials and methods. The first set of investigations were conducted on a 0.5 mm thick coupon of cp-Ti fixed in a place by a thin layer of hot wax between the sample and an aluminum mounting stub. The load over stiffness derived from relations on hardness and the measured modulus were also investigated by a method to highlight compliance effects in nanoindentation.
