Drag and diffusivity within emergent vegetation

Aquatic plants convert mean kinetic energy into turbulent kinetic energy at the scale of the plant. This energy transfer, linked to stem-wake generation, affects both the vegetative drag and the plant-induced turbulent diffusivity. Drawing on this phenomenological link we develop a model which couples these flow parameters. Experimental observations are presented which support the link between canopy diffusivity and canopy drag. The study extends previous models of vegetative resistance by incorporating the dependence of drag coefficient on population density.
