Targetry and radiochemical methods are reported for the production of no-carrier-added 97Ru (2.88 d; 100% EC; 216 keV, 86%; 324 keV, 11%). 97Ru has potential as a label in radiopharmaceutical synthesis and as a tracer in diagnostic nuclear-medicine procedures. Proton-induced reactions on 103Rh targets were studied using an external beam of 67.5-MeV protons from a 1.93-m (76 in.) isochronous cyclotron. Thick-target yields (mCi/μAh) for 97Ru were measured in the 67- to 37-MeV proton-energy range. Cumulative 97Ru yields, as well as the total cross section, were also calculated. 97Ru yields of 1.36 mCi/μAh (at end-of-bombardment) were measured from metallic Rh targets. Radiochemical methods are described for the separation of 97Ru from isotopes of the elements Pd, Rh and Tc that can also be produced. The method described here has several basic and practical advantages over other reported procedures, and can be utilized for the production of radiopharmaceutical-quality 97Ru.
