Abstract

Correction to: Nature Geosciencehttps://doi.org/10.1038/s41561-022-01068-0, published online 14 November 2022. In the version of the article originally published there was an error in the thermal conductivity used to calculate heat flow, Fs.The stated value was 3 W mK –1 but a value of 4 W mK–1 was accidentally used in the calculation of heat flow values (column L) in Supplementary Tables 1 and 3 and in creating the heat flow map in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 and Extended Data Figs. 1 and 2 used the correct value of 3 W mK –1. Recalculating heat flow gives an average value for all coronae of 77.52 ± 69.25 mW m–2. In the revised Fig. 2 (where “navy blue” in the caption has been changed to “cyan”), there are now 36 locations with heat flow > 75 mW m –2, rather than 52 values. The conductivity correction affects heat flow estimates derived from near-global Te. For low Te values of 5–15 km, which represent ~40% of the planet (excluding tesserae), heat flow ranges from 116 to 39 mW m−2. For the ~45% of the planet with Te of ~25–55+ km, heat flow is ≤11–23 mW m−2. The conclusions remain robust. First, a large fraction of sites (34%) have heat flow greater than 75 mW m–2 and are consistent with active rifting regions on Earth. Second, the average heat flow for the study sites of 77.52 ± 69.25 mW/m –2 is well above the stagnant lid range shown in Fig. 3. For comparison, the original figures are shown in the Supplementary information. All changes have been made in the HTML and PDF versions of the article. (Figure presented.) Corrected. Supplementary information is available in the online version of this amendment.
