Abstract
It has been discovered experimentally that the oxidation of a number of aromatic amines and phenols by oxygen diffusing from the atmosphere is accompanied by the formation of stationary spatial structures. The reaction takes place in an alkaline medium, and there is a critical thickness for the layer of the solution and a critical concentration of sodium hydroxide, below which such structures are not observed. Diffusional instability is regarded as the mechanism for the formation of stationary spatial structures. A theoretical model having diffusional instability has been proposed on the basis of an analysis of the mechanism of the oxidation of hydroquinone.
