Abstract
A European mill is using an oxygen-bleaching stage (OXYPRO™ OR) to brighten, color strip, and clean a MOW (mixed office waste) furnish containing up to 15% groundwood. The OR stage is part of a totally chlorine-free two-stage oxidative-reductive bleaching process. Quality of the recycled pulp is competitive with virgin market pulp. This report reviews the layout and performance of the commercial system and describes pulp properties. Pulp strength improves through the OR stage, while unbleached fiber and dirt content are reduced. The OR stage had only a small effect on BOD5 and COD content of the bleach-stage filtrate.
