Abstract
A study was conducted to design a series of bulk metallic glass (BMG), having the combination of optimized properties for thermoplastic forming (TPF). The temperature dependence of equilibrium Newtonian viscosity of Zr 35Ti30Cu8.25Be26.25 and several other glass forming liquids, with different Angell fragility numbers were considered for the study. It was found that Zr35Ti 30Cu8.25Be26.25 showed fragile behavior, as compared with the strong Vitreloy series of liquids. It was also found that its viscosity in the thermoplastic zone was at least two orders of magnitude lower than that of these liquids. It was observed that the BMG alloys demonstrated strong thermoplastic processability and better mechanical properties.
