Abstract
Batch anodic electrochemical treatments in solutions of ammonium sulfate have been evaluated as methods of improving the adhesion of high-modulus, pitch-precursor carbon fibers with an epoxy matrix. Such treatments in concentrated solutions at high current densities resulted in over two-fold improvements in the fiber/matrix interfacial shear strength. Subsequent characterization suggested that these increases could not be significantly attributed to increases in chemical interactions between the fiber and matrix material.
