Abstract
Harmonic and principal components analyses are applied to long-term monthly averaged wind speeds for 223 stations in the United States. The principal components analysis shows that one spatial pattern is remarkably coherent throughout all twelve months. Harmonic analysis reveals that while the annual cycle dominates the intermonthly pattern at most stations, semi-annual cycles are significant in the northern Great Plains and along the eastern Florida peninsula. Maps of the phase angles, amplitudes, and explained variance levels of the harmonic waves help to identify the controls of the observed spatial and temporal patterns in the wind speed data.
